Yair Rodriguez Expresses Reservations About Diego Lopes Representing Mexico

MMA News

MIAMI – Yair Rodriguez is focused on his path to the UFC featherweight title. He envisions potentially competing for the belt within the next few months, provided things go his way.

Rodriguez (19-5 MMA, 10-4 UFC), who is scheduled to fight this Saturday on the main card of UFC 314 at Kaseya Center, is mapping out his route to the championship. His plan involves first defeating former Bellator champion Patricio Freire (36-7 MMA, 0-0 UFC). Following that, he hopes Diego Lopes will triumph over Alexander Volkanovski for the vacant title in the main event of UFC 314.

If these outcomes materialize, Rodriguez anticipates a matchup against Lopes for the UFC title at Noche UFC in Guadalajara on September 13.

“That’s my vision,” Rodriguez stated during the UFC 314 media day on Wednesday. “While I am fully respecting my current opponent ‘Pitbull,’ preparation for all possibilities is key. You need to visualize your goals to make them happen, and that’s what I’ve been doing.”

“I recently messaged Brandon Moreno after his fight, congratulating him on his impressive performance and evolution. He responded expressing his excitement about potentially competing in Guadalajara. I suggested we aim for two championships in Guadalajara, which would be a historic achievement. That’s my aspiration.”

A UFC title fight between Lopes and Rodriguez would be a significant event for both Mexico and Latin America. Rodriguez is considered a pioneer of Mexican MMA and one of the country`s original stars, having won the inaugural season of The Ultimate Fighter: Latin America in 2014.

Lopes, originally from Brazil, has also gained popularity in Mexico. He resides and trains in Mexico, is associated with Alexa Grasso’s Lobo Gym in Guadalajara, and has experienced a rapid rise in the UFC.

Despite Lopes`s connection to Mexico, Rodriguez disagrees with the idea of him representing Mexico in MMA.

“Yes, I do have an issue with that, although not with Diego personally,” Rodriguez clarified. “He is simply doing what he needs to do professionally. My concern is with the broader perception. I acknowledge his talent and exciting fighting style, but I still disagree with it. It’s not something I would do or want to be. If he chooses to do it, that’s his choice. If people see him as Mexican, I can’t control that.”

“I have dedicated years to representing my country. If the fans decide to support him over me should we ever fight, that is their prerogative. I have consistently strived to represent Mexico. I have given my blood and tears for my country, and I deeply cherish my Mexican identity.”
