Alex Ovechkin is just one goal away from surpassing Wayne Gretzky as the NHL`s all-time leading scorer. After tying Gretzky on Friday with two goals, Ovechkin will have his next chance to make history on Sunday when the Capitals face the New York Islanders.
Coming off an impressive two-goal game against the Blackhawks at Capital One Arena, Ovechkin decided against scoring his 895th goal into an empty net to break the record. Hockey fans are eagerly anticipating Ovechkin`s next game against the Islanders.
Capitals coach Spencer Carbery noted after Friday`s game, `He wants to break the record with a goalie in the net, and I respect that.` He confirmed Ovechkin`s decision to wait for a goal in regular play.
With six games remaining in the Capitals` season, Ovechkin has plenty of opportunities to break the record before the season ends. Even at 39, Ovechkin`s scoring ability remains strong. His first goal on Friday marked his 14th 40-goal season, surpassing Gretzky`s previous record.
Ovechkin has a history of success against the Islanders, scoring 44 goals in 71 games, making them the eighth team he has scored the most goals against.
