UFC commentator Michael Bisping suggests that Justin Gaethje could be the next opponent for UFC lightweight champion Islam Makhachev.
Following his recent victory over Rafael Fiziev at UFC 313, Gaethje is looking for a significant fight. Makhachev, having already defeated top contenders like Arman Tsarukyan and Charles Oliveira, needs a new challenger for his title.
While Ilia Topuria, the new lightweight champion, is also a possibility, Makhachev`s team prefers Topuria to prove himself further. Bisping believes this situation opens the door for Gaethje.
Bisping stated on his YouTube channel that with Charles Oliveira ranked No. 2 and Justin Gaethje at No. 3, Gaethje presents a fresh title challenge as he hasn`t fought Makhachev before. He also pointed out Gaethje`s experience and suggested a fight against Makhachev would be a deserving opportunity for Gaethje to potentially become champion.
Bisping emphasized Gaethje`s thrilling fight style and his consistent entertainment value for fans, referencing his recent fight with Fiziev. He believes Gaethje has earned a title shot, especially as discussions between Topuria and Oliveira might lead to them fighting each other instead.
Bisping acknowledges Topuria`s claim for a title shot but thinks the verbal sparring between Topuria and Oliveira might lead to a fight between them. He concludes that if Gaethje remains patient, he might emerge as the chosen challenger for Makhachev, while Topuria and Oliveira could compete for the No. 1 contender spot.
