The Formula 1 community has come together to express heartfelt tributes to Eddie Jordan, the renowned former team owner, following his death at the age of 76.
Earlier on Thursday, Jordan’s family announced that the beloved Irish entrepreneur, who famously gave Michael Schumacher his start in Formula 1, had succumbed to cancer.
The news reached the paddock ahead of the Chinese Grand Prix, prompting an outpouring of admiration from drivers and teams across social media.
George Russell of Mercedes described it as “a very sad day,” adding, “We have lost a true legend, a unique voice within the sport. My thoughts are with Eddie’s family. His impact will always be remembered. We dedicate this weekend’s race to him.”
Carlos Sainz, currently with Williams, shared his sadness upon learning of Eddie Jordan’s passing, calling him “a true icon and a much-loved figure in our sport. Passionate, loyal, and truly unique. He will be deeply missed. Rest in peace.”
Esteban Ocon of Haas added that he was fortunate to have known Eddie, highlighting him as “a great character and an even better person. My thoughts are with his family and friends. RIP Eddie.”
Eddie Jordan transitioned to television punditry in recent years but is best remembered for founding his own Jordan team in 1991. It was with Jordan that Michael Schumacher began his legendary career. Jordan sold the team in 2005 due to financial challenges.
The team, after several ownership and name changes, now races as Aston Martin.
While Schumacher was quickly recruited by Benetton, Damon Hill achieved victory with Jordan in 1998. The team reached its peak in 1999, finishing third in the constructors’ championship and securing four race wins overall.
Flavio Briatore, former Benetton team principal now with Alpine, expressed deep sorrow, remembering Eddie Jordan as “a great individual who always brought joy to the F1 paddock. I cherish the memories with Eddie, both on and off the track, and his presence will be greatly missed in the F1 world.”
Lawrence Stroll, owner of Aston Martin, described Eddie Jordan as “a true racer, a great leader, and one of the sport’s most significant personalities. He was a friend for over thirty years, and I will miss him dearly.”
Zak Brown, CEO of McLaren, stated, “Everyone at McLaren is deeply saddened by Eddie Jordan’s passing. Eddie was a vibrant person who always wore his heart on his sleeve. His passion for Formula 1 was immense, and his legacy is remarkable.”
Christian Horner shared on Instagram, “Very sorry to hear about Eddie Jordan’s passing. He was a hugely colorful character. I first met Eddie in 1991. His advice, ‘get a good sponsor…welcome to the Piranha Club!’ He was full of energy and a pleasure to work with.”
Horner concluded, “Formula 1 has lost a legend, and we will miss his wit and Irish charm.”
James Vowles, Williams’ team principal, added, “I am deeply saddened by Eddie’s passing. He was a larger-than-life character who positively transformed our sport. He was a remarkable independent leader among giants.”
