VNL 2025 Analysis
A seventh straight defeat pushes the Thai squad perilously close to the bottom of the standings.
The Volleyball Nations League 2025 campaign continues to prove a stern test for Thailand`s women`s national team. Competing in Arlington, USA, the squad suffered their third consecutive loss of the week, extending their overall losing streak in the tournament to a worrying seven matches.
Their latest challenge came against the Dominican Republic. While the Thai team displayed moments of resilience, they were ultimately unable to contain the Caribbean power, succumbing to a straight-sets defeat with scores of 25-21, 25-18, and 25-23. This result underscores a difficult phase for the reigning Asian champions in this global competition.
Dominican Power on Display
For the Dominican Republic, the match in Arlington provided a valuable opportunity. Despite being out of contention for the VNL Finals, securing this victory helps their form and preparation for future international events, notably the upcoming World Championship. Their win was spearheaded by an effective offensive unit.
Team captain Brayelin Martinez led the scoring charge with an impressive 17 points, contributing significantly through kills and blocks. She was well supported by her sister, middle blocker Jineiry Martinez, and opposite Gaila Gonzalez, who each added 15 points. Gonzalez highlighted the team`s focus on integrating new players and refining their game throughout the VNL.
Thailand`s Relegation Tightrope
The mounting losses place Thailand in a precarious position regarding relegation from the VNL. With only one win and five points accumulated so far, they sit at 17th place in the standings, just one point ahead of Korea in 18th. The team currently occupying 18th place at the end of the preliminary phase faces the drop.
Adding to the tension, Thailand has only one match remaining – against Canada. In contrast, their closest rival for survival, Korea, still has two matches left to play against Bulgaria and France. This means Thailand`s fate is not entirely in their own hands, depending on Korea`s results this weekend.
Navigating a Difficult Season
From the Thai perspective, the season has been acknowledged as challenging. As expressed by setter Pornpun Guedpard, the team hasn`t achieved the level of competitiveness seen in previous VNL editions. However, the campaign is viewed as an important developmental stage, providing crucial international experience for the team`s younger players.
Despite the setbacks, the team remains determined to finish the preliminary phase on a positive note, aiming for a much-needed second victory in their final fixture. Captain Ajcharaporn Kongyot, who was the sole Thai player to reach double-digit scoring against the Dominican Republic with 13 points, continues to lead the effort on the court.
Looking Ahead
While the Dominican Republic uses the VNL as a stepping stone, Thailand faces a critical final match that could determine their status in the league next season. The battle to avoid the bottom spot promises a tense conclusion to the preliminary phase.
