Simone Vagnozzi, coach of world No. 1 Jannik Sinner, shared his thoughts on his player`s recent encounters with Carlos Alcaraz.
“I would definitely include Riyadh,” Vagnozzi stated, referring to the 2024 exhibition final where Sinner defeated Alcaraz. “Because although it was an exhibition, a lot was on the line in that match… They both tried very hard to win.”
He continued, “In all matches, the outcome was decided by small details. In Rome, of course, it was a bit tougher. Alcaraz had played many matches on clay by then, while our situation was somewhat different. But we were satisfied – especially with the first set, which was close. We expected a game similar to that. It also depends on the spin they both impart.”
Vagnozzi observed, “It even seems the underdog wins more often. If we were to reach a final again, we would be the underdogs – and that could help. But during the match, there are small opportunities that can change its course – you have to be attentive and use them. It didn`t work out in Rome, but I don`t think there are any secrets in their matches.”
Regarding external perceptions, he added, “Have I seen the documentary series about Alcaraz? Yes, I liked it. It`s important to understand that these guys are 22-23 years old, and sometimes they also want to live life to the fullest. Instead, they are often destroyed by everyone after the first loss, because it seems they cannot lose. But we must remember that these guys sacrifice a lot to do what they love.”
