A new feature film focused on mixed martial arts is in development and will be directed by a prominent filmmaker.
Zack Snyder is set to direct “Brawler,” a movie reportedly centered on a Los Angeles man`s ascent within the UFC. According to Variety, Snyder will co-write and produce the film alongside UFC CEO Dana White and Turki Alalshikh, who heads Saudi Arabia`s General Entertainment Authority.
Snyder has been a regular attendee at UFC events for a long time, and now he is bringing his understanding of the UFC`s brand of entertainment to the cinema.
“They are both very dedicated to this project, aiming to show fans the dedication required to become a UFC champion,” White stated, as reported by Ring Magazine, which Alalshikh acquired in 2024. “This is a highly ambitious project, and I am excited to see it unfold.”
Currently, there are no announced schedules for production, casting, or release dates for the movie.
Snyder`s directorial debut was with “Dawn of the Dead” over two decades ago, followed by the critically acclaimed “300,” which he co-wrote. His expertise in action sequences, particularly demonstrated in “300,” would likely be beneficial in directing MMA fight scenes.
In recent years, Snyder has become a somewhat divisive figure in the industry, especially among fans debating his interpretations of iconic DC Comics characters like Superman in “Man of Steel” and Batman. Notably, he directed the 2017 “Justice League,” but stepped away during production after his daughter`s passing. While credited as the sole director, he indicated that much of his original vision was altered. A version reflecting his original intent was released in 2021, receiving significantly better reviews from both fans and critics compared to the initial release.
“Behind every accomplished fighter is a compelling story of their journey,” Snyder commented. “UFC is the leading organization in combat sports globally, and I am honored to collaborate with them to share this remarkable narrative.”
