COCONUT CREEK, Fla. – A fight between Paddy Pimblett and Renato Moicano might happen in the future, but not soon.
Before UFC 314, Moicano was ranked higher than Pimblett in the lightweight division. However, after Pimblett’s impressive victory over Michael Chandler this past Saturday, “The Baddy” is expected to move into the top rankings.
“I don’t think I’m fighting Paddy Pimblett anytime soon,” Moicano said on Monday.
Moicano, who recently lost a title fight, is being realistic. Pimblett’s UFC career has been developing steadily since 2021.
Over time, Pimblett and Moicano have exchanged words in interviews and on social media. Pimblett reignited their feud after Moicano’s loss.
Despite past tensions, Moicano’s tone has changed somewhat following UFC 314.
“The thing is, people think I hate Paddy Pimblett. I don’t hate Paddy Pimblett,” Moicano stated. “He is well-known, so I wanted to fight him, but currently, that fight is unlikely. The UFC is supporting Paddy Pimblett. We know this. Why? Because Dana White mentioned at the UFC 314 press conference that a win over Chandler would put him in title contention. I disagree, but who am I to question the UFC?”
“The UFC knows what they’re doing, and if they are supporting Paddy, there’s a reason. Paddy Pimblett’s next opponent will likely be Charles Oliveira or Justin Gaethje.”
Moicano’s next steps are uncertain. With his wife expecting a baby in late May, Moicano plans to fight after the baby arrives.
Moicano mentioned he is not concerned about his opponent’s ranking.
“Just give me an easy fight,” Moicano joked.
