World No. 39 Anastasia Potapova stated that she is currently in the best form of her entire career. Following her 6-4, 6-4 victory over China`s Zheng Qinwen in the second round of the WTA 1000 event in Madrid, the Russian shared her perspective.
Asked about her win against a Top 10 opponent – her first since 2023 – Potapova admitted she might have primarily faced players ranked 11th or 12th recently, which perhaps skewed her perception of how long it had been since her last Top 10 win. She expressed a clear desire for such victories to occur more frequently and for her to win these matches with greater confidence.
Regarding where she sees herself in terms of game level and potential ranking, Potapova confidently stated, “I can enter the Top 20 – I feel I`m at that level, I should be there.” While cautious about making definitive promises, noting that every player aims higher, she reiterated her strong belief that she is playing the best tennis of her career right now.
Potapova`s next match in the tournament will be against American player Sofia Kenin.
