Oilers Stage Historic Comeback, Tie Series; U.S. Open Shocks

NHL News

πŸ’ Good morning to all but especially to … THE EDMONTON OILERS

They say records are meant to be broken, and Leon Draisaitl alongside the Oilers did just that, shattering multiple records in one game to potentially rescue their season. Draisaitl netted the game-winning goal, propelling Edmonton to a thrilling 5-4 overtime victory against the Panthers in Game 4. The Stanley Cup Final series is now deadlocked at 2-2.

  • Matthew Tkachuk scored two power-play goals in the first period, followed by Anton Lundell making it 3-0 later in the frame. Edmonton appeared lost, taking excessive penalties and failing to generate offense.
  • Edmonton replaced starting goalie Stuart Skinner with Calvin Pickard, and the momentum shifted. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins (on a power play) and Darnell Nurse (from a sharp angle) scored high, and Vasily Podkolzin found the net during a scramble to level the game.
  • A shot from Jake Walman put the Oilers ahead 4-3 in the third period, but Sam Reinhart tied the game in a frantic sequence with just 19.5 seconds left. It was the second-latest game-tying goal in Stanley Cup Final history, only surpassed by Corey Perry`s in Game 2.
  • Florida controlled much of the overtime period, but Pickard made crucial saves. Then, Draisaitl received a cross-ice pass and scored when his one-handed shot deflected off Niko Mikkola and slipped through Sergei Bobrovsky`s legs.

This game wrote history: Teams trailing by three or more goals after the first period were previously 0-37 in Stanley Cup Final history. It also ties for the largest road comeback in Final history with the 1919 Canadiens. Furthermore, Draisaitl`s four overtime goals are now the most in a single postseason.

Remarkable game, remarkable series.

πŸ€ Re-picking NBA Finals ahead of Thunder-Pacers Game 4

At CBS Sports, we believe in accountability, even when it means revisiting predictions that haven`t panned out. Before the NBA Finals commenced, all six of our experts had picked the Thunder to defeat the Pacers.

With Indiana now leading the series 2-1, making some initial predictions (like Thunder in five) impossible and others unlikely, we asked our experts to provide updated picks. Interestingly, only one expert shifted their pick from Oklahoma City to Indiana.

Here`s one expert`s revised prediction:

  • Ward-Henninger: `Thunder in 7. (Original pick: Thunder in 7.) I should feel proud that I originally predicted a long series, but now I actually feel nervous about sticking with the Thunder. Ultimately I`m banking on OKC`s substantial home-court advantage (just eight home losses in the regular and postseason combined) to carry them to a Game 7 win. That being said, they`re going to have to win one game in Indiana, and there are already signs that the Pacers are starting to wear OKC down — which could become more glaring as the series progresses.`

The betting odds still favor Oklahoma City to win the series and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander to be named MVP. However, strong performances, like Bennedict Mathurin`s effort in Game 3, and the perceived good luck charm of Caitlin Clark for Indiana, could potentially lead to a historic upset.

Antonio Brown Sought for Arrest on Attempted Murder Charge

Authorities in Miami-Dade County, Florida, are reportedly seeking to arrest former NFL superstar Antonio Brown on a charge of attempted murder with a firearm.

  • This development stems from an alleged altercation involving Brown and others at a boxing event in mid-May. Brown was briefly detained and handcuffed at the time but was not arrested.
  • Brown claimed on social media that he was attacked by individuals attempting to steal his jewelry.
  • According to police, video footage shows Brown punching a man, appearing to take a security guard`s gun, and then firing two shots at the man he had punched.
  • The reported victim told investigators that Brown shot at him twice, potentially grazing his neck.
  • The issued arrest warrant also includes a requirement for Brown to post a $10,000 bond and remain under house arrest if apprehended.

This is an ongoing and developing story.

⚾ College World Series Picks, Storylines

Welcome to Omaha! The College World Series begins today, featuring eight teams representing six different conferences (with Oregon State being an independent) vying for the final national championship of the 2024-25 academic year.

SEC powerhouses Arkansas and LSU currently have the shortest betting odds, but Murray State is also present as a potential Cinderella story. Notably, for the first time since 1957, none of this year`s College World Series teams made it to Omaha the previous year.

Despite the turnover, there`s plenty of star power. LSU ace Kade Anderson ranks highly on lists of the most important players at the CWS and is a top prospect in the 2025 MLB Draft rankings.

Can he lead the Tigers to a title? Carter Bahn`s predictions are in, and his champion pick is…

  • Bahn: `Arkansas. — Elite talent is abundant on a roster that appeared to be the country`s deepest and most balanced throughout the season. SEC Player of the Year Wehiwa Aloy is a superstar yet has only the third-best batting average on the team. Six regulars in the lineup hit .320 or better. The bullpen provides excellent support to an established starting rotation and is the main factor behind their stellar 3.91 team ERA. This highly regarded program seeking its first CWS title has virtually no weaknesses.`

The FIFA Club World Cup is set to kick off tomorrow, bringing together top football clubs from around the globe for a unique tournament that will unfold over the next several weeks.

It features a diverse mix of teams. Many participants are continental champions from 2021-24, including European powerhouses like Manchester City, Real Madrid, and Chelsea, as well as the 2025 winner PSG. The tournament also includes champions from Asia, Africa, North/Central America and the Caribbean, South America, and Oceania. Lionel Messi`s Inter Miami squad qualified as the representative from the host nation, the United States, by winning the 2024 MLS Supporters` Shield.

The event offers the excitement of seeing many stars potentially with new teams for the first time (imagine Trent Alexander-Arnold in a Real Madrid jersey) and generally features many star-studded rosters. Additionally, several stadiums will get another trial run as World Cup venues after hosting the hectic Copa America last summer, as Pardeep Cattry notes.
