Tuesday night marked the commencement of two more series in the second round of the NHL playoffs. The Carolina Hurricanes secured a significant road victory in overtime against the Washington Capitals, while the Edmonton Oilers claimed Game 1 against the Vegas Golden Knights with a comeback performance.
In the initial game, Carolina consistently bombarded Capitals goaltender Logan Thompson with shots throughout the contest. Although prime scoring opportunities were limited, the Hurricanes maintained clear control of territory. Despite their advantage, the Capitals held a 1-0 lead entering the third period, thanks to a goal by Aliaksei Protas.
Logan Stankoven finally equalized for Carolina halfway through the third period. The score remained tied through the end of regulation. In overtime, Hurricanes defenseman Jaccob Slavin ended the game, firing a shot through traffic that slipped under Thompson`s pad for a 2-1 win.
In Las Vegas, the Golden Knights quickly took a 2-0 lead in the first period with two goals from captain Mark Stone. Just as it seemed Vegas might dominate, Edmonton found their rhythm, led by Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl. The duo combined for four points on the Oilers` subsequent two goals, and Zach Hyman netted the game-winner with only a few minutes left in the third period.
As the Golden Knights pressed to tie the game, Connor Brown sealed the victory for the Oilers with a fantastic solo effort, making the final score 4-2 and giving Edmonton a 1-0 series lead.
Playoff action continues on Wednesday night. The Florida Panthers will face the Toronto Maple Leafs in Game 2, attempting to even their series. Additionally, the Winnipeg Jets will host the Dallas Stars to begin their series between the Central Division rivals.
