Nadia Siuda: The Unseen Force Behind Poland’s Unbeaten U19 Run

Sports News

In the high-stakes environment of the FIVB Girls` U19 World Championship, where national pride and future careers are forged, Poland`s remarkable unbeaten journey stands out. At the core of this success is Nadia Siuda, the team`s exceptionally talented setter and captain. More than just distributing the ball, Siuda acts as the strategic fulcrum, the vital connection that allows the Polish squad to operate with such seamless effectiveness.

While possessing a noted talent for drawing—a passion now reserved for leisure—fate, or perhaps dedicated training, has firmly placed volleyball at the forefront of Siuda`s life. Her unique blend of setting skill and on-court creativity has been a consistent highlight throughout the tournament. Poland`s path to the quarterfinals has included overcoming formidable opponents such as defending champions USA, 2023 silver medalists Türkiye, and reigning European champions Bulgaria, a testament to the team`s strength and Siuda`s guidance.

“We have a great team,” Siuda states, highlighting the collective spirit. “We are 12 great players who really love what they do.” She emphasizes the importance of enjoying their time on the court, a philosophy that clearly contributes to their cohesion. For Siuda, the captaincy is a source of immense pleasure. “I feel great when I can support my team both as their leader and setter,” she explains, acknowledging the constant involvement required in every play.

Having finished atop Pool C undefeated with 13 points, Poland demonstrated their continued form by sweeping aside Thailand in the Round of 16. The road ahead includes a quarterfinal clash against Asian silver medalists Japan. Siuda noted that Thailand presented a strong challenge as expected, crediting their own defense as the deciding factor in that match. The team`s unbeaten status fuels confidence, though they remain grounded.

“It`s amazing that we are still unbeaten and are ready to face Japan,” she remarked. “It’s another team from Asia, so we have to plan well.” Reflecting on the tournament draw, the team understood it would be challenging but believed in their potential if they performed at their best. The experience gained in each match has significantly boosted their self-assurance. While the ultimate target is the gold medal, Siuda understands that “every match is important.” This perspective is perhaps sharpened by her experience in the 2023 edition, where Poland was eliminated in the Round of 16 by Croatia.

Siuda`s connection to volleyball runs deep within her family. Her mother, Wiesława Siuda, was a professional volleyball player, while her father coached football. This sporting lineage naturally steered her towards the court from a young age. “They showed me the sports route and I loved it from the beginning,” she says, adding, “I’ve never thought of doing something different.” Her mother played a significant role as her initial coach and continues to provide support, albeit now primarily as a parent.

Interestingly, Siuda`s journey to becoming a setter wasn`t direct. In her junior years, her smaller stature led her to play as a libero, a defensive specialist. As she grew, she transitioned to the setter position she holds today. This evolution, playing both critical roles, provided her with a profound understanding of the game. “Reception is of course the most important aspect of volleyball,” she notes, “and being a setter, everything in the team depends on your execution.” She believes playing both positions has been crucial in developing her as both a player and a leader, enabling effective interaction with all teammates on the court.

Her list of inspirations reflects a deep appreciation for mastery in different facets of the game. She admires Italian setter Alessia Orro for her strong character and impactful presence, while Serbian setter Maja Ognjenović`s unpredictable and creative style earns a delighted description as “a crazy setter.” Poland`s own Joanna Wołosz, a successful captain in the top Italian league, serves as a significant role model for young Polish setters. Beyond setters, she finds inspiration in Brazil`s star outside hitter Gabriela Guimarães, praising her immense passion and fierce competitiveness—”like a tiger on the court.”

Currently aligned with Polish club PGE Grot Budowlani Łódź, Siuda is focused on her development while keeping an eye on future goals, including a call-up to the senior national team. Her long-term aspirations include playing in the highly competitive Italian and Turkish leagues, which she considers among the world`s best. Looking further ahead, she expresses interest in experiencing Asian leagues, potentially in China or Japan, towards the end of her career. She is intrigued by their distinct training methodologies and strategic approaches, noting that these differences are even apparent at the current World Championship.

Perhaps a move to Japan later in life would offer a perfect blend: a distinguished conclusion to a volleyball career, combined with opportunities to indulge in her artistic hobby and enjoy her favorite meal, sushi. For now, Nadia Siuda remains squarely focused on guiding Poland`s U19 team, her leadership and setting expertise propelling them forward in their quest for championship gold.
