Mikaela Hestmann: A Rising Star’s Choice for Brazilian Volleyball

Sports News

In the competitive world of elite youth sports, pivotal decisions often shape nascent careers. For Mikaela Hestmann Tierno, a rising star in Brazilian volleyball currently showcasing her talent at the 2025 FIVB Girls’ U19 World Championship, one such decision defined her path: prioritizing her passion for the sport over family relocation.

Born in Norway in 2007, Mikaela moved to Rio de Janeiro at just two months old. Growing up in the iconic Brazilian city, famous for its beaches and, perhaps less universally known but equally significant locally, its volleyball culture, her introduction to the sport felt almost inevitable. Following her older brothers, she first encountered the game on the sand courts of Rio`s vast coastline around the age of 10. The transition from beach to indoor club volleyball quickly solidified her dedication.

The true test of her commitment arrived a few years later. In 2021, Mikaela`s mother and brothers decided to return to Norway. Faced with the prospect of leaving the environment where her love for volleyball had blossomed, the young athlete made a conscious choice to stay in Brazil. She remained with her father, her decision rooted in the daily practice, the strong team bonds, and the sense of belonging she found on the court. As she put it, she “found herself in volleyball.”

Her talent was undeniable, earning her a spot on Brazil`s U19 national team at just 14. This early exposure led to success, including two continental silver medals in 2022. Building on this, she participated in the 2023 U19 World Championship. By 2023, Hestmann had emerged as a key player and leader. Her standout performance at the U19 South American Championship that year not only led Brazil to the title but also earned her the prestigious MVP award, a place on the Dream Team, and recognition as the tournament`s best server. Her potent serve remains a weapon, evident in her impressive six aces against hosts Serbia in the current U19 World Championship pool stage.

Mikaela`s rapid development did not go unnoticed in Brazil`s highly competitive professional scene. For the 2024-2025 season, she made her debut in the Superliga, arguably one of the strongest national leagues globally. Her destination was none other than Sesc RJ Flamengo Rio de Janeiro, coached by the legendary figure of Bernardo Rezende (often known as Bernardino). Playing under Rezende was a significant milestone.

Reflecting on her experience with the multi-Olympic gold medalist coach, Mikaela highlighted the invaluable lessons learned. Beyond technical skills, she emphasized the importance of team spirit and, particularly, the principle of “really, really hard work.” Rezende`s philosophy that dedication is paramount resonated deeply, instilling in her the belief that consistent effort builds confidence and leads to strong performance.

With Brazil showing strong form, winning their initial six matches at the U19 World Championship and advancing to the final stages, Mikaela expressed confidence in her team`s capabilities while acknowledging the strength of their opponents. For the 17-year-old, this tournament is another crucial step on a path aimed squarely at the pinnacle of the sport. Her ambitions are clear and resolute: to become an Olympic champion and to win the Brazilian Superliga title with her team in Rio. Her early choices and relentless pursuit suggest these goals are well within reach for this dedicated athlete.
