Former world No. 3 Maria Sakkari is expected to see a drop in her WTA ranking following the Charleston tournament.
In the second round, the Greek player was defeated by Zheng Qinwen with a score of 4-6, 1-6. This loss means she will not defend her previous semifinal result, placing her at the 81st position in the live rankings.
Following her match, Sakkari addressed a comment on Twitter that questioned her chances of re-entering the Top 10: `Maria Sakkari will fall out of the Top 80 after losing in Charleston… Honestly, it`s hard to imagine her returning to the Top 10.`
Sakkari responded to this by stating, `Am I the first or the last person to come back after an injury and lose points?` It is recalled that the tennis player concluded her season prematurely last October due to a shoulder injury.
