Josh Emmett, rejuvenated and focused, is prepared to challenge Lerone Murphy`s undefeated record at the upcoming UFC on ESPN 65. After taking a break to regain peak condition, Emmett is eager to make a statement in the featherweight division.
The main event of Saturday`s UFC Apex card will feature Emmett (19-4 MMA, 10-4 UFC) against Murphy, who boasts an unblemished professional record. Emmett`s return to the octagon comes after a self-imposed hiatus since December 2023, a period dedicated to personal and professional optimization.
“I felt it was necessary to step back and work on myself to compete at my best,” Emmett explained during media day. “For the past few years, I haven`t been performing to my full potential. I needed to get back to 100 percent, and now my training reflects that. I’m excited for fans to see the results on Saturday night.”
Emmett`s journey includes a fight for the interim title against Yair Rodriguez in early 2023, followed by a `Fight of the Night` performance against Ilia Topuria. He rebounded impressively with a knockout victory over Bryce Mitchell at UFC 296, showcasing his power and resilience.
With his sights set on title contention, Emmett views this headliner as a crucial opportunity. The featherweight title picture is in flux with Alexander Volkanovski and Diego Lopes vying for the vacant belt at UFC 314. Emmett intends to secure a victory over Murphy and closely monitor the title fight in Miami.
Acknowledging Murphy`s skills and undefeated status (15-0-1 MMA, 7-0-1 UFC), Emmett believes he possesses a more refined and complete skillset. He plans to expose Murphy`s vulnerabilities when they clash in the octagon.
“Murphy has mentioned he’s still developing, even in recent fights,” Emmett noted. “But against me, there’s no room for on-the-job training.”
“He`s a good fighter, but he hasn`t faced anyone with my capabilities. He may think he`s fought similar opponents, but none come close to my level. Saturday night will be a harsh reality check for him.”
