Sports News

World No. 24 Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia has become the first tennis player since 2012 to defeat both the world`s first and second-ranked players in a single clay-court tournament.

The last player to accomplish this was 23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams of the USA, who in 2012 defeated Belarusian Victoria Azarenka (6-1, 6-3) and Russian Maria Sharapova (6-1, 6-3) at the Madrid tournament.

Furthermore, according to Opta Ace, Ostapenko is the first player to overcome both Poland`s Iga Swiatek and Belarus` Aryna Sabalenko in the same WTA clay-court event.

In the quarterfinals of the WTA 500 tournament in Stuttgart, Ostapenko was stronger than Swiatek 6-3, 3-6, 6-2, and in the final, she defeated Sabalenko 6-4, 6-1.
