The hockey community has demonstrated widespread support for Winnipeg Jets center Mark Scheifele. Following the unexpected passing of his father, Brad Scheifele, donations exceeding $30,000 have been made to the Winnipeg Jets` charitable arm, the True North Youth Foundation, in his memory.
Brad Scheifele`s death occurred the night before the Jets were scheduled to play Game 6 of their second-round playoff series against the Dallas Stars.
Despite the profound personal tragedy, Mark Scheifele chose to play in the crucial Game 6 on Saturday, with the Jets facing elimination. He scored the team`s sole goal in a game they eventually lost 2-1 in overtime, ending their Stanley Cup Playoff run.
In a display of solidarity, players from both the Jets and Stars offered their condolences and support to Scheifele during the post-game handshake line. Many individuals also chose to honor Brad Scheifele by donating $55 – matching Mark Scheifele`s jersey number – to the True North Youth Foundation.
Krista Sinaisky, a spokesperson for True North Sports + Entertainment, confirmed that over $30,000 was specifically raised through these $55 donations. “A wonderful outpouring of support from the hockey community on a very tough day for the Jets family, our True North Youth Foundation is extremely grateful,” Sinaisky stated.
Financial contributions were also directed towards KidSport Canada, another charitable organization supported by Scheifele. Notably, fans of the opposing Dallas Stars joined the fundraising effort, demonstrating goodwill and respect for Scheifele`s courage during such a difficult time.
Just courageous what he did tonight. I`m sure his dad would`ve been really proud of him and what he did, and I`m sure his dad would`ve wanted him there. Tough night for him and anybody in the hockey world that has been in a situation like that. Hats off to him. A courageous young man.
With the Winnipeg Jets` season now concluded, General Manager Kevin Cheveldayoff affirmed that the organization is fully committed to supporting Mark Scheifele.
