Frankie Edgar, a former UFC lightweight champion, believes Islam Makhachev is well on his way to becoming the greatest lightweight fighter in history.
Edgar, who himself held the lightweight title back in 2010 and defended it twice, recently shared his thoughts on MMA Junkie Radio, naming Islam Makhachev as his pick for the 155-pound division`s GOAT.
Makhachev`s reign as champion includes four successful title defenses, notably against Alexander Volkanovski (twice), Dustin Poirier, and Renato Moicano. Currently, he is awaiting his next fight.
“If Islam continues on his current trajectory, you have to acknowledge him,” Edgar stated. “He isn`t just defending the belt; he`s finishing his opponents. He probably takes the top spot.”
Although Edgar is proud of his own championship past, he seems content with his retirement in 2022. He remains active by coaching wrestling to his children, which he finds brings similar excitement and pressure to his fighting days.
“I’m coaching my kids in wrestling,” Edgar explained. “It definitely brings similar nerves and worries – along with the joy. I think it’s the closest thing to fighting.”
