Former Coach Aguirre: Davidovich Fokina Could Break into Top 10 This Year

Sports News

Former coach of Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, Jorge Aguirre, spoke about parting ways with the Spanish tennis player.

– What happened between you and Alejandro?

– There`s no simple answer. We never had conflicts. We parted ways at the tournament in Rome last year and haven`t communicated since. I prefer not to comment on the details. Alejandro is an outstanding player, and I am confident that he can enter the Top 10 this season.

– It seemed like you would always be together.

– I thought so too, as if we were destined to achieve great heights. But sometimes external circumstances intervene that are impossible to control.

– How did you cope with the breakup?

– It was tough. I`m not a novice and know how to deal with difficulties, including thanks to my knowledge of psychology. But this is not quickly forgotten. This project lasted 14 years: a boy with a difficult character rose to the 21st line of the world ranking.

– Why didn`t you continue working together for at least another year?

– I was sure that in a year we would enter the Top 10, like many others. I wouldn`t be surprised if in a couple of months Alejandro becomes, for example, ninth. But the question is whether it will be possible to stay in the top ten for five years? It`s difficult to predict.

– The problem of stability is relevant even for Alcaraz.

– Carlos is not always stable, but he is the leader of the championship race. For me, he is the best on the Tour. Maintaining perfect form throughout the season is incredibly difficult. There are always moments – whether it`s minor stress or physical discomfort.

– But Sinner succeeded in 2024.

– They have an equal battle. For me, they are both geniuses, but Carlos is of galactic scale.

– Do you see anyone who is at the same level with them?

– No, right now there is no one on the horizon, – said Aguirre in an interview.
