F1 25 Preview: LIDAR Scans and Enhanced Accuracy

Formula 1 News

F1 25 is set to become the most realistic and current Formula 1 racing simulation upon its release. We visited Codemasters studio in Birmingham, England, to uncover the details. During our studio visit, we had the opportunity to play the newest build of F1 25 and learn about all the exciting new features that dedicated fans will appreciate.

Experienced players will immediately notice improvements in track precision. Bahrain, Miami, Melbourne, Suzuka, and Imola circuits have been revamped using LIDAR scanning technology. LIDAR, short for `light detection and ranging`, enables tracks to be recreated with incredibly accurate bends and corners that mirror real-world scale. These scans were conducted during actual Grand Prix weekends, capturing even specific barrier placements as they were during the races.

Lee Mather, senior creative director, emphasizes that long-time F1 game players will recognize the difference.

“Some people pointed out the `Mickey Mouse` section in Miami, under the overpass,” Mather explained. “Our initial version, based on the original track data, was quite tight. While it is narrow in reality, the LIDAR version reveals it to be slightly more open. This particular section stood out to me the most.”

Further refinements include enhanced track surface textures and updated vegetation for all LIDAR tracks. Trees appear denser and fuller, and new plant species have been incorporated to boost realism. The impact might be subtle until you race through Suzuka and observe the cherry blossom trees along the horizon, precisely mirroring their real-world locations. These seemingly minor adjustments contribute to a significantly more immersive track atmosphere.

Three non-LIDAR tracks, Silverstone, Austria, and Zandvoort, have also been refreshed. Notably, these are the first tracks in F1 game history that will offer reverse direction racing. Developing Reverse Tracks is more complex than it may seem, but these additions will provide veteran players with an entirely fresh way to experience classic circuits.

Adding to the enhancements are refined and unique engine sounds, a new Decal Editor, Path Tracing on PC, new F1 World events, 8K resolution support on PS5 Pro at launch, and more. F1 25`s upgrades are substantial, and while some might seem incremental individually, their collective impact creates a distinct feel for the new game. LIDAR-scanned tracks represent a major advancement, but the combination of all improvements truly distinguishes F1 25 as a novel experience.
