The countdown is on for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, set to be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Currently managing Fenerbahce in Turkey, Jose Mourinho will be watching this major global event from afar, rather than from a team dugout.
However, there are suggestions that the “Special One” might consider pursuing the American football dream sometime in the near future. Mourinho`s contract in Istanbul is set to expire next summer, potentially leaving him free to seek a new challenge.
Known for his significant charisma and flair, the former manager of clubs like Chelsea, Inter Milan, Real Madrid, and Manchester United is no stranger to big challenges and would undoubtedly bring a vibrant presence to the U.S. soccer scene.
Florent Malouda, a former France international who played under Mourinho at Chelsea, commented on the possibility. He stated that a move to MLS would depend on the specific club (“franchise”). Malouda highlighted Mourinho`s preference for having considerable influence over squad selection as a key factor. He also mentioned that joining the league mid-season (which typically starts in February or March) would make it difficult for Mourinho to have an immediate impact.
“But after the World Cup,” Malouda added, “football will be more developed and there will be even more franchises, someone like him would be great for the show.”
Reports suggest Mourinho has appeared somewhat frustrated in Turkey, hinting at a potential openness to a new venture in 2026. While MLS remains a possibility, he is also frequently discussed as a future manager for the Portugal national team. This role might become available depending on how Cristiano Ronaldo and current coach Roberto Martinez perform in upcoming major tournaments.
