Conor McGregor is contemplating a run for President of Ireland, adding a political dimension to his already illustrious career.
His recent meeting with former US President Donald Trump has seemingly bolstered McGregor`s ambition to enter Irish politics. Despite not competing in MMA since a leg injury sustained in a July 2021 fight against Dustin Poirier at UFC 164, McGregor maintains that fighting remains in his plans.
While acknowledging his current focus on Irish politics, McGregor (22-6 MMA, 10-4 UFC) affirmed his intention to continue fighting.
“Absolutely, I will fight again. Are you crazy?” McGregor stated at a press conference. “It`s even part of my motivation to run for President – imagine being announced as President of Ireland while still actively competing! Yes, fighting is definitely still on my mind.”
McGregor mentioned turning down a recent fight offer outside of the UFC. Despite being content with his accomplishments, the 36-year-old “Notorious” hinted at ongoing negotiations for his return to fighting.
“I have two fights left on my UFC contract, and we are in discussions,” McGregor revealed when questioned about fighting in BKFC. “Recently, after visiting the White House, my concern for Ireland has deepened. I am satisfied with my career achievements, but I feel a pull towards addressing issues in Ireland right now. We`ll see what happens. Greatness cannot be rushed. There was a recent offer to fight at Alcatraz, but it didn`t meet my valuation.”
He continued, “An event in Alcatraz was proposed for June, but the offer wasn`t right for my worth. As a fighter, knowing your value is crucial. I hold pay-per-view and gate records, and my return will be the biggest combat sports comeback ever. So, everything needs to be perfect. Currently, Ireland is my priority, but I assure you, the fighting will return. It’s always great to be involved in these discussions.”
