The CONCACAF Gold Cup is the premier international football tournament in North America, Central America, and the Caribbean region. Since its inception in 1991, the competition has been held 16 times.

Mexico enters the 2025 CONCACAF Gold Cup as the defending champion, scheduled from June 14 to July 6. In a thrilling final of the 2023 edition, Santiago Gimenez, a substitute player from Mexico, scored a late goal to secure a 1-0 victory against Panama.

Historically, the CONCACAF Gold Cup has been largely dominated by Mexico and the United States. These two football powerhouses have consistently battled for regional supremacy, while other nations have mainly played supporting roles. Canada stands out as the only exception, having broken this duopoly by winning the Gold Cup in 2000.

The United States claimed the first Gold Cup title in 1991. Mexico then went on to win the next three tournaments before Canada interrupted their streak in 2000 by defeating guest team Colombia in the final.

Since Canada`s victory, the Gold Cup trophy has consistently alternated between the USA and Mexico, with no other country able to challenge their dominance. Even strong guest nations like Brazil have been unable to break the hold of these two dominant teams.
