World No. 4 and 2023 US Open champion Coco Gauff has shared her insights into the reasons behind her defeat by Aryna Sabalenka in the final of the WTA 1000 tournament in Madrid, Spain. The American player lost the match with a score of 3-6, 6-7(3), notably letting a 5-3 lead in the second set slip away.
Speaking in a video for the WTA, Gauff highlighted her serve performance as a key issue:
“My first serve percentage was very low. When you`re playing against someone who`s that aggressive like Aryna, you definitely need to make more first serves. I wish I could have done a better job at that. I had a set point opportunity in the second set and opportunities in the tiebreaker to get up.”
Following the tournament, Gauff also posted a message on her personal social media reflecting on her performance.
In her post, the young теннисистка wrote:
“Thank you Madrid! Not the outcome I wanted but still a lot to be proud of. Leaving here with my head held high and a lot of motivation to work even harder to do better next time.”
