Sports News

The Women`s Volleyball Nations League 2025 preliminary phase continues to heat up, and China has officially become one of the elite teams heading to the Finals in Lodz, Poland. Their qualification was confirmed following a crucial victory over Canada in Arlington, USA.

China`s triumph came after a four-set battle, ending with a 3-1 scoreline (25-22, 25-15, 22-25, 25-23). This win propelled the Asian powerhouse into a secure position within the top eight, ensuring their participation in the final stage of the tournament.

Young Stars Lead the Charge

A significant factor in China`s successful qualification campaign, and particularly in the match against Canada, was the exceptional performance of their younger players. 22-year-old outside hitter Zhuang Yushan delivered a match-high 21 points, showcasing her diverse attacking skills, including three aces and a kill block. Her teammate, also 22 years old, Wu Mengjie, contributed a vital 18 points and had the honor of scoring the match-winning point.

Team captain and opposite, Gong Xiangyu, provided valuable support with 14 points. Zhuang Yushan expressed her satisfaction after securing the Finals berth, noting it was her first time participating in the VNL and praising the team`s energetic play and mutual support on the court.

Canada`s Fight and the VNL Landscape

Canada, despite the loss, saw several players reach double-digit scoring. 21-year-old opposite Anna Smrek led their effort with 14 points, including four blocks, matched by 19-year-old outside hitter Abagayle Guezen also with 14 points. Middle blocker Emily Maglio added 12 points, and outside Andrea Mitrovic contributed 11.

China`s victory solidifies their standing in the VNL table, currently placing them sixth with a 7-3 win-loss record and 20 points. They join a strong contingent of teams already qualified for Lodz, including hosts Poland, Italy, Brazil, Japan, and Turkiye. The race for the remaining two spots in the Finals is still open, with Germany, USA, and rookies Czechia in contention. Meanwhile, at the lower end of the table, Canada (2-8, 7 points) sits in 16th place, one of three teams, alongside Thailand and Korea, battling to avoid relegation.

With their ticket booked, China will now shift their focus towards preparing for the intense competition that awaits them in the VNL Finals in Lodz.
