With Alex Ovechkin just one goal away from surpassing Wayne Gretzky`s legendary record, excitement is building, and fans want to see history made live. Tickets to Sunday`s game between the Washington Capitals and the New York Islanders at UBS Arena are now very expensive.
Ovechkin equaled Gretzky`s record of 894 goals on Friday, meaning his next goal could be the record-breaker. As the Capitals prepare to face the Islanders, ticket prices for this game have dramatically increased in recent days.
According to TickPick, the cheapest available ticket for the Capitals-Islanders game is currently $600. This price is for upper-level seats at UBS Arena. Fans who planned ahead could have purchased tickets for much less.
Earlier in the season, the lowest ticket price for this game was only $48. Even as recently as Thursday, tickets could be bought for $163. While still a significant amount, it`s considerably less than the current price.
These high prices might be justified if Ovechkin scores his record-breaking goal on Sunday. However, it`s not guaranteed. While Ovechkin has scored 44 goals in his career against the Islanders, he has never scored against their current goalie, Ilya Sorokin, who is expected to play in the game.
Ovechkin has stated that he prefers to break the record with a goal scored on a goalie, not into an empty net.
