Washington Capitals defenseman Alexander Alexeyev was reportedly involved in an incident on Saturday that led to his arrest and a charge of public intoxication. According to a report from ARLnow, police used pepper spray on the player during the events.
The alleged altercation occurred outside a bar in the Clarendon neighborhood of Arlington, Virginia. Arlington County Police Department spokesperson Kiyah Daniell told ARLnow that officers were alerted by a witness around 3:26 a.m. who reported seeing a fight between two men near Big Tony`s Pizza on Clarendon Blvd.
When officers arrived at the scene, Alexeyev was allegedly involved in a physical confrontation with the other man. Police deployed pepper spray on the Capitals defenseman as they took him into custody.
Daniell`s statement confirmed the sequence of events: “Officers subsequently observed the male suspect involved in a physical altercation with the male subject. As officers approached, the male suspect assaulted the male subject, and one officer deployed pepper spray as he was taken into custody. The suspect was treated on scene by medics for pepper spray exposure.”
Alexeyev was booked into the Arlington County jail at 4:19 a.m. on Saturday morning and has since been released.
The 25-year-old Alexeyev was a first-round pick by Washington in the 2018 NHL Draft. He made his NHL debut in 2021 and has appeared in 80 games for the Capitals during his career.
Last season, Alexeyev played in eight regular-season games without scoring a point, but he participated in all 10 of the Capitals` playoff games. His current contract with Washington is set to expire this summer, making him a restricted free agent.
