Aryna Sabalenka Explains Unique Fly Swatter Celebration After Madrid Title

Sports News

World number one, Belarusian tennis star Aryna Sabalenka, has revealed the amusing reason why her team celebrated her WTA 1000 title victory in Madrid wielding fly swatters.

“I told the team it was time for them to speak English in the box so people would understand what was happening,” Sabalenka explained.

“I think it was during the match against Mertens, when I lost the first set and was coming back to the court. It was noisy, and I couldn`t hear what my coach was saying, and frankly, I didn`t really want to hear it anyway. So I just waved him off. I didn`t catch his reaction at the time, but later I saw the video, and he had said: `Yeah, there are flies everywhere here, so many flies` – which is quite funny on its own.”

“And in the next match, I didn`t notice it again, but then I saw a video of them holding fly swatters. I was like: `You guys are hilarious.` And by the end of the tournament, they were actually swatting with them.”

“It’s simply how we are; we approach everything with sarcasm and constantly tease each other. It`s fantastic that no one on our team takes anything too seriously or personally. They are always laughing at me, and I`m laughing at them. I believe that`s the key to our harmony,” Sabalenka shared during her press conference.
