Amanda Anisimova Retires in Charleston Semi-final

Sports News

American tennis player Amanda Anisimova, ranked No. 16 in the world, stopped playing in the first set of her WTA 500 Charleston tournament semi-final match. She was playing against fellow American Sofia Kenin, who is ranked No. 44. At the time of Anisimova`s retirement, Kenin was leading 5/2. The match had lasted 29 minutes.

In her previous quarter-final match against Emma Navarro, Anisimova took a medical timeout because of blisters. According to TennisUpToDate, Anisimova said, `My skin just tore. I taped my fingers in the last two matches, the physio said she would do it again, and I got upset. Honestly, I hate taking a medical timeout for blisters. It hurt when I was serving for the match, and it was really necessary.`

The exact reason for Anisimova`s withdrawal from the semi-final is not yet known.

Sofia Kenin will now play against another American, Jessica Pegula, the world No. 4, in the Charleston final.
