Alex Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals, a celebrated figure in NHL history, is on the cusp of surpassing Wayne Gretzky`s record for the most career goals.
At 39 years old, Ovechkin is nearing the NHL all-time goals record, with a chance to overtake Gretzky`s 894 goals before this season concludes. Currently, Ovechkin has scored 891 goals, adding his 38th of the season this Tuesday during a game against the Bruins.
With eight games remaining in the 2024-25 season after Tuesday, Ovechkin needs just four more goals to beat Gretzky`s record.
As the regular season approaches its end, Ovechkin`s pursuit of “The Great One`s” record leaves little room for error. Maintaining his current scoring pace could see him break Gretzky`s record by April 17, the last day of the regular season.
Achieving one or two multi-goal games would significantly boost his chances. He has accomplished this five times this season, though only once since late November. Here’s a look at the Capitals` upcoming games and the average goals allowed by each opponent.
