Alex Ovechkin Breaks NHL Goals Record

NHL News

Wayne Gretzky`s once untouchable NHL record for career goals has been overtaken by Alex Ovechkin. Immediately after Ovechkin scored his 895th goal, Gretzky himself was on the ice to congratulate the Washington Capitals star.

Ovechkin achieved this milestone with his 325th power play goal, sending him sliding across the ice in celebration. During the subsequent on-ice ceremony at UBS Arena, Gretzky descended from his seat to address the fans and personally congratulate Ovechkin.

Gretzky extended his congratulations to Ovechkin`s family, fulfilling a promise to be among the first to shake his hand upon breaking the record.

Notably, Gretzky wore a Gordie Howe pin while honoring Ovechkin`s achievement. Howe, who was present when Gretzky broke his own record of 801 goals, inspired Gretzky to be there for Ovechkin`s historic moment.

“When I broke Gordie Howe`s record, he was there,” Gretzky recalled. “I stated two years ago that if Alex approached my record, I would be here. That`s the tradition of the National Hockey League. It`s about passing the torch. I hope that when someone breaks Alex`s record, Alex will be there to shake their hand.”

Reflecting on the future, Gretzky expressed uncertainty about whether anyone will ever surpass Ovechkin`s record, acknowledging that Ovechkin`s goal count will continue to rise before he retires.

“Speaking from experience, I know how incredibly challenging it is to reach 894 goals, making 895 truly extraordinary,” Gretzky emphasized. “My heartfelt congratulations go out to Alex, his parents, his family, his wife, and children. People say records are meant to be broken, but I`m not sure anyone will score more goals than him.”
