As the Stanley Cup Final is underway, the National Hockey League continues its announcements regarding some of the league`s award winners, leading up to the full NHL Awards ceremony scheduled for later this month.
Most recently, the NHL revealed that Montreal Canadiens defenseman Lane Hutson has won the Calder Trophy, an award recognizing the top rookie. Hutson received a significant majority of the first-place votes (165 out of 191), finishing ahead of the other two finalists: Calgary Flames goaltender Dustin Wolf and San Jose Sharks forward Macklin Celebrini.
Hutson made history as just the fourth defenseman in the modern era (since 1943-44) to lead all rookies in scoring, concluding the season with 66 points. He joins an exclusive group of defensemen who have achieved this feat: Bobby Orr (41), Brian Leetch (71), and Quinn Hughes (53). His impressive 60 assists also tie Larry Murphy (Kings, 1980-81) for the record of most assists by a rookie defenseman in NHL history. With this Calder Trophy win, Hutson becomes the third player from the Canadiens to receive the award during the expansion era (since 1967-68), following Brendan Gallagher (2012-13) and Ken Dryden (1971-72).
The league also recently announced that Florida Panthers captain Aleksander Barkov has won the Selke Trophy for the second consecutive year. Barkov was chosen over fellow finalists Anthony Cirelli and Sam Reinhart after another exceptional performance excelling at both ends of the ice. His strong play contributed to the Panthers ranking among the NHL`s top 10 teams in goals-against per contest (seventh, 2.72) and penalty-killing percentage (tenth, 80.7%).
The winners for the remaining awards will be revealed at the 2025 NHL Awards show, set to take place on June 12th, prior to Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Final.
Selke Trophy
Awarded to the forward who best excels in the defensive aspects of the game.
- Winner: Aleksander Barkov (Florida Panthers)
- Finalist: Anthony Cirelli (Tampa Bay Lightning)
- Finalist: Sam Reinhart (Florida Panthers)
This is Barkov`s second straight Selke win and his third overall career title. He was widely anticipated to win again, demonstrating a plus-13 goal differential at five-on-five while taking on the toughest assignments and still producing 71 points offensively. Barkov`s dominance in this category appears set to continue.
Calder Trophy
Presented to the player selected as the most proficient in their first year of competition.
- Winner: Lane Hutson (Montreal Canadiens)
- Finalist: Dustin Wolf (Calgary Flames)

However, Hutson thrived, leading all NHL rookies in scoring with 66 points (six goals and 60 assists). He became just the fourth defenseman to lead rookie scoring in the league`s modern era (since 1943-44). Hutson quickly established himself as a key defenseman for Montreal, becoming a crucial building block for a young team that made the Stanley Cup playoffs this year.
