As the Stanley Cup Playoffs progress, the National Hockey League (NHL) continues to unveil the finalists for its major awards for the 2024-25 season.
During the 2025 NHL Draft Lottery, the nominees for the Calder Trophy, presented to the top rookie, were announced. The three finalists are Macklin Celebrini from the San Jose Sharks, Lane Hutson of the Montreal Canadiens, and Dustin Wolf from the Calgary Flames.
Lane Hutson achieved a notable feat, becoming just the fourth defenseman in the modern era (since 1943-44) to lead all rookies in points (66). He joins an exclusive group featuring Bobby Orr (41), Brian Leetch (71), and Quinn Hughes (53) as the only blue-liners to accomplish this. His 60 assists matched Larry Murphy`s mark (Kings, 1980-81) for the most assists by a rookie defenseman in NHL history. Should he win the Calder Trophy, he would be the third Canadiens player to receive the award in the expansion era (since 1967-68), following Brendan Gallagher (2012-13) and Ken Dryden (1971-72).
The league also recently confirmed that Florida Panthers captain Aleksander Barkov secured his second consecutive Selke Trophy, awarded to the best defensive forward. He edged out fellow contenders Anthony Cirelli and Sam Reinhart after another exceptional two-way season. Barkov`s leadership helped the Panthers rank among the NHL`s top 10 in goals-against per game (seventh, 2.72) and tenth in penalty-killing efficiency (80.7%).
The remaining NHL Awards are scheduled to be announced daily throughout mid-May. The 2025 NHL Awards ceremony is planned for June 2025, although the specific date has not yet been revealed.
